What Drip Edge Flashing Actually Does

Drip edge is a bent metal strip fastened along the perimeter of the roof deck. The vertical leg hangs slightly away from the fascia, and the outward kick throws water clear of the wood instead of letting it cling to the underside of the shingle and curl back. Without that hard edge to break surface tension, water tracks straight down the fascia.

It does three jobs at once. It protects the exposed edge of the plywood or OSB deck, the first place sheathing swells and delaminates. It supports the overhanging edge of shingles so they don't sag and crack over time. And it gives wind-driven rain a defined stopping point rather than an open seam to push through.

Why Older Orange County Roofs Often Have No Drip Edge

Drip edge was not required by earlier code cycles, and plenty of 1970s through 1990s homes here were shingled straight to the deck edge with nothing but a starter course and good intentions. It worked, more or less, because our dry season is long and annual rainfall is modest. Damage from a missing edge is slow, cumulative, and invisible from the driveway.

Then comes an El Niño winter or a run of atmospheric rivers, and months of rain arrive in weeks. Signs Your Drip Edge Is Missing, Failing, or Installed Wrong

Check your perimeter from the ground with binoculars. Look for peeling or blistering fascia paint, dark streaks running down the fascia below the gutter line, and soffit boards darkening at the edges. Gutters pulling away from the fascia are another tell — the wood behind them has softened. Inside, check the top plate of exterior walls in the attic for tannin staining.

Installation errors are as common as omissions. Never climb up to look during or after rain — wet composition and tile are genuinely dangerous, and a ladder at the eave shows you most of what matters.

Where Drip Edge Goes: Under at the Eaves, Over at the Rakes

One rule trips up even experienced crews: at the eaves, drip edge goes under the underlayment; at the rakes, it goes over. Reverse that and you have built a funnel. Water traveling down the underlayment at the eave should land on top of the metal and shed outward, while water blowing up a rake needs metal covering the underlayment line so nothing gets behind it.

Pieces should lap two inches minimum in the direction of flow, corners mitered or lapped rather than butted, fasteners set high on the flange every eight to ten inches. Adding drip edge to an existing roof is possible but not always advisable. Sliding metal under the first course means breaking the seal strip, and on a brittle twelve-year-old composition roof that causes more damage than it prevents. A gutter apron installed over the shingle edge is often the smarter interim move, protecting the fascia without disturbing the field.
